External Files

An external file is a file created and maintained in your host operating environment. External files contain data or text, such as
  • SAS programming statements
  • records of raw data
  • procedure output.

SAS software can use external files, but they are not managed by SAS software.

A file shortcut (or fileref) is an optional name used to identify an external file to SAS software. The file shortcut lasts only the duration of your SAS session.
