SAS Libraries

A SAS library is the highest level of organization for information within SAS software. As a unit of organization, a SAS library is a logical concept that is constant regardless of the media or host on which it is stored. This logical concept has different implementations depending on your computer, but it roughly corresponds to the level of organization your host system uses to access and store files.

The table below summarizes the implementation of SAS libraries in various operating environments.

In this environment... A SAS library is...
Windows, UNIX,
VMS
(directory based-systems)

CMS a group of SAS files with the same filetype.

OS/390 a specially formatted host data set in which only SAS files are stored.
